Last week, the Army STEM Truck visited LCMHS. The truck was on campus between the days of March 24 and March 26 and was temporarily available to juniors and seniors enrolled in Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes.
The truck featured many interactive activities for students to engage with. It helped to teach students about the opportunities present in the Army. The truck was located in the back parking lot near the CTE building.
“This was a brand-new truck with lots of fun things to do,” CTE-CCMR coordinator Cathy Miller said. “They had a virtual Oculus Rift VR system, an AH-6 flight simulator, a M9 weapon laser spot, two virtual parachute simulators, cool soldier and weapon displays, and a career navigator.”
The STEM truck presented an opportunity for students to discover what the average soldier experiences and goes through. It helps students get a feel for what those in the Army do day-to-day.
According to Miller, the Oculus VR system and the flight and parachute simulators were fan favorites among students that visited the truck.
The Army asked to bring the STEM truck to the LCM campus for students to experience. The truck has set up at many other high schools and colleges around the United States.
“The Army educated the students by providing history, a career navigator, and examples of skills/tasks they would perform in the Army through the simulators,” Miller said.
The STEM truck visited the school last year, and they are expected to return in the following school year. The truck was free to visit for all eligible students.
“Many of the students that visited the truck were very impressed with the information that was available, and we always look forward to the Army visit,” Miller said.
