The Honey Bear Drill team will hold tryouts for the 2026-2027 squad on March 27 in the Grove gym.
To tryout for social officer, students must be in at least 10th grade and must have been on the team as a freshman. To tryout for a position as a line officer, students must need to have been on the team for at least one year and be an upcoming junior or senior. Current Honey Bears need to tryout regardless to stay on the team.
“Those trying out for a leadership position will perform a solo and do an interview,” senior Lieutenant Amelia Miller said.
For tryouts, there will be two days of learning dances, which is mandatory for everyone trying out. The third day is a mock tryout day, and the fourth day is the actual tryouts. The girls will demonstrate their left kick, a jazz/pom routine, and demonstrate splits.
“They will then wait for call backs, and the scores will be posted,” Miller said.
Some criteria that the girls have to meet to be a Honey Bear is being friendly, uplifting of others, hard working, spirit-filled, and coachable. They must be able to take criticism, be respectful, and be self aware.
“Some criteria are also being able to demonstrate left and right split, a single turn, a press leap, and being able to smile,” senior captain Catelyn Wesson.
The current officer’s roles in this years tryouts include keeping the rest of the team in line and helping in anyway that they can. The seniors help encourage the girls, assist the directors, and teach dances.
“I try to keep the spirit up and have confidence,” sophomore social officer Bailey Vandagriff said. “I do not do anything else because I am also trying out.”
Tryouts give returning and new members a chance to meet each other and learn about the team.
“Tryouts are not a scary thing,” junior lieutenant Peyton Matthews said. “Tt is actually a fun week to learn and make new friends.”
