A ten-hour flight, a new language, and a new culture to learn; junior Finn Person has come to America to experience the American dream.
Person flew from Germany to America to spend his high school year as a foreign exchange student. Person used Experiment and SHARE! to find a host family and get settled in America. He said he did not get to choose which host family he was placed in or which high school he attended.
“I learned about it because my uncle did an exchange year and we had an exchange student in our house back in Germany two years ago,” Person said.
Person said that he likes being able to learn about the culture and see how it is in another family.
“I needed to answer many questions online and then wait for the mail that said they found a host family for me,” Person said.
He said that driving in America is different than in Germany when it comes to age and rules of the road. Person said that school is different as well.
“The school is different in Germany,” Person said. “We have way more classes than here.”
Person said that what he misses the most about Germany is his family, friends, and the food.
“My favorite food from Germany is schnitzel with mushrooms, cream sauce, and fried potatoes,” Person said
Person said he will stay for the rest of the school year, then go back to Germany. He said he likes making new friends.
“It sometimes is still a bit difficult for me to speak English all the time,” Person said. “And it is also hard to eat so much fast food but I like it.”
