Bait in the water, fishing rod in hand, and sun beating down, sophomore Jay Delk has got these fishing competitions hooked.
Delk has had a successful season on the Bass Team. He has participated in the SETX Championship, TBN Regional, and State Championship. He recently received an award from Mayor Larry Spears for catching a 13.02-pound bass. Delk will participate in the BassMaster National HS Championship July 20 through Aug 1.
“I prepare by researching past tournaments on the specific body of water, look for specific things like the form of cover the fish are relating to at the time of year we are fishing,” Delk said. “I will research the forge in the lakes we are fishing in as well. Then, I will mark points of interest on my graph that I want to check while I am on the water.”
Delk grew up fishing and said he has been doing it for as long as he can remember. He began to participate in competitive fishing in 5th grade.
“I think fishing has changed my morals and ethics over the years,” Delk said. “I now have newfound respect for not only my competition, but also this beautiful creation God has provided for us to use as we please.”
Delk believes the hardest part of fishing is staying with the fish and the mental stress of traveling constantly and always being busy. There are also many aspects of fishing that are his favorite.
“My favorite part of fishing is the interactions that I am in with my peers, and I even enjoy the competition,” Delk said. “I love being able to have conversations about the sport I enjoy so much.”
Delk said in typical fishing competitions you have a start time and a check-in time. During that time, you get to fish and weigh a total of five fish to try and get the best weight. This year, Delk earned the title of Jr. Lake Record Holder and Angler of the Year. He was able to compete in Georgia and placed 87th out of a total of 280 boats and finished 2nd from Texas.
“I am very greatful for this opportunity,” Delk said. “I would like to thank my mom, dad, and Mrs. Nellie Miller for allowing me to pursue my passion. I would like to give another thanks to God for his creation and I hope that I will be able to pursue my passion of fishing in the future.”
