The halls of Lamar State College Orange are filled with opportunity, but for one graduating senior Derek Lopez, they also represent something more—a chance to lead, serve, and leave a lasting impact. Recently nominated for the prestigious role of LSCO Ambassador, Lopez is preparing to step into a position that blends leadership with community, and pride with purpose.
For him, the journey to LSCO did not begin with a brochure or a campus visit, it started much closer to home.
“I wanted to get involved because my brother, Zane, was an Ambassador, and he loved having the opportunity to help his college community,” Lopez said. “Seeing his experience inspired me, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps and make a positive impact at LSCO.”
That influence did not just guide his college choice; it helped shape his vision for leadership. Unlike many students who grow into leadership roles over time, he entered LSCO already seeing himself stepping up.
“Yes, I did see myself in a leadership role because I’ve had a background in leadership before,” Lopez said. “At LSCO, though, it feels more meaningful because I truly enjoy helping others, and this role feels like it was meant for me.”
At the center of that mindset is a strong support system, especially his brother, who continues to play a defining role in his growth.
“My brother Zane has had the biggest influence on me,” Lopez said. “He’s always pushed me to become a better person, and we’ve always supported each other. I’m really proud of everything he’s accomplished and grateful for the role he’s played in shaping who I am today.”
Being an LSCO Ambassador, however, goes beyond influence or ambition. To Lopez, it represents a standard.
“Being an LSCO Ambassador means being smart, kind, respectful, and a strong leader,” Lopez said. “It means being someone who represents the school well and genuinely loves helping others.”
As he looks ahead to his first year of college, it is not just the title that excites him—it is the experience.
“I’m most excited for my first year of college, having more independence, and being able to help others in the LSCO community at the same time,” Lopez said.
That balance of independence and responsibility is something Lopez takes seriously, especially when it comes to representing the college to others.
“I will represent LSCO with pride,” Lopez said. “I’m proud to attend this college, and I will represent it wholeheartedly by being positive, respectful, and supportive to everyone I meet.”
Still, Lopez sees this opportunity not just as a way to give back, but also as a chance to grow.
“I want to become more confident, improve my communication skills, and learn how to better help and support others in an effective way,” Lopez said.
Looking toward the future of LSCO, Lopez hopes to see even more students take advantage of what the college offers.
“I would love to see more people become part of the Gator community—getting involved, saving money, and learning from excellent professors and strong programs,” Lopez said.
And when his time as an Ambassador eventually comes to an end, he hopes his impact will be remembered in a meaningful way.
“I want to be remembered as a smart, respectful, and trustworthy person—someone others could rely on and come to when they needed help,” Lopez said.
More than anything, he wants his legacy to set a standard for those who follow.
“I want to leave a legacy of being the best Ambassador I can be—helping others, leading by example, being genuine to everyone, and always supporting my college,” Lopez said.
