Matthew Huckaby has returned to the high school campus this year as the assistant principal.

From construction to teaching, assistant principal Matthew Huckaby has experience in many distinct aspects of career. With this year being his 14th year in education, Huckaby has an abundance of eagerness to step in and build a connection with the students on the high school campus. 

Huckaby recently worked as the assistant principal at Mauriceville Middle School and so has had to adjust to working with high school students in this aspect. Huckaby said he has many goals he wants to carry out moving forward. 

“My goal this year is to build relationships and make a positive impact on our campus as a whole,” Huckaby said. 

With this objective in mind, Huckaby aims to influence both students and faculty through his optimistic outlook, ensuring that each individual receives the opportunity to be genuinely recognized.  Although this task may come with difficulty Huckaby sees this goal as a priority. 

“I try to be authentic in everything that I do,” Huckaby said. “I try to be intentional when interacting with teachers and students alike. If you see me, I will almost always say hello. I think it is important for students to know that they are seen and not simply watched. Building relationships with students is an important priority for me. It is a part of my role that I look forward to a great deal.”  

Stepping foot into the assistant principal position was simply a natural progression for Huckaby’s career. Although this role comes with tedious tasks and long work days, Huckaby fully intends to meet the challenge head on and fulfil his role as a leader that leads by example. 

“I show up and give 100 percent of what I have each day,” Huckaby said. “I try to be supportive and empower our staff to be successful in their roles as well. We are in this together and it takes us all to make this campus great.”  

In efforts to carry out aspirations and to grow the campus, it can be easy to get lost in the workload that piles up throughout the work day, but for Huckaby, he maintains a work-life balance by changing the perspective and setting priorities. In this way, Huckaby can achieve goals and build a better relationship with his family. 

“I enjoy spending time with my family and as an educator being on their same schedule is a great way to do that,” Huckaby said. “My absolute greatest accomplishment is being a dad. I love it. I have been blessed with two amazing children and cannot wait to see all that they accomplish in their lifetime.”  

With all the new obstacles and arrangements within Huckaby’s first year as assistant principal here at LCM there is much that he aspires to be moving forward.  

“I want to be known as the guy that cares enough to do the difficult things in order to make a real impact in the lives of students and to inspire them to find their purpose,” Huckaby said. “Life is so much more than a career. Perspective and purpose can change a lot of things.”
