Just about every high school student has fond memories attached to the Scholastic Book Fair. Many reminisce about when times were simpler and could have never imagined that it would come to the high school. But for librarian Melanie Claybar, she decided to bring back the nostalgia by hosting LCM High School’s first ever Scholastic Book Fair.
The Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the Graphic Novels section of the library for the week of Jan. 12 to Jan. 16. The book fair will accept debit cards, credit cards, Apple Pay or Google Pay as payment; cash will not be accepted. The book fair will also be open during the Open House on Jan. 12, and parents will be allowed to shop at the book fair during that time.
“Students often mention how much they loved the book fairs in elementary school, and I’ve wanted to do one for a while, but I wasn’t sure if it would be successful,” Claybar said. “Mrs. Hawk suggested we use the open house as a kick-off for the fair and to invite parents to see our library and what we have to offer.”
The book fair will have all the iconic knickknacks that students associate with the book fairs from elementary school. According to Claybar, the Scholastic Book Fair will have books of many genres— fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, etc.—pens and pencils, posters, journals, erasers, and lots of bookmarks.
“I’ve enjoyed hearing the excitement from students who have fond memories of book fairs, and I hope to spark some new memories for high school,” Claybar said.
The Scholastic Book Fair was put together by Claybar and all the other teachers and staff that assisted her in setting this up for students to enjoy.
“Mrs. Laurence has helped me, but I’ve also asked a lot of questions to the other librarians in our district since they are the book fair experts,” Claybar said. “It’s a lot of work to set it up but the Scholastic company has it very organized so that helps.”
All students are welcome to visit the Scholastic Book Fair through the week of Jan. 12 to Jan. 16. While reading may not be everybody’s cup of tea, there is always the possibility of discovering a new book that students may enjoy more than expected. All proceeds from the Scholastic Book Fair will directly support the school library.
“I want all students to be readers, but even if you don’t love reading, you can find a book you love,” Claybar said. “The book fair is a great opportunity to browse and find something you didn’t know you’d like. I hope to see everyone there.”
