The new Texas phone law, House Bill 1481, prohibits students from using personal communication devices during the school day. These devices include phones, smartwatches, and other personal wireless devices being used during instructional and non-instructional times. These devices must be powered off and always put away. This law has been implemented in 18 states.
I feel that student’s grades have been significantly better since the phone policy was put into place. Without phones, students are not distracted by the constant notifications or the temptations to scroll on social media. Now they are forced to stay engaged and listen to the teacher’s lesson. Students are understanding the lessons more clearly and making better grades.
People are addicted to phones and when they have them, it increases the risk of getting in trouble. Since phones are now removed from schools, fights, the discipline rate, and cyberbullying have gone down significantly. With students being phone-free, they can no longer text their friends or stir up drama. This has led to fewer conflicts and a calmer school environment.
People have been noticeably more welcoming and friendly this year. In the past, when phones were in the equation, there was a barrier between people. Many students were so focused on their screens that they did not take the time to talk, socialize, or form meaningful connections with those around them. This year, people have been very inviting to their friend groups. So many people now have many new friends, and I think we owe it to the phone law. The law has brought us together. Removing phones allows us to interact face-to-face and get to know each other on a deep level.
Students have been way more active this year. Without phones to occupy all their free time, they are looking for opportunities to get involved. These things include joining clubs, sports, and after-school activities. This year, the number of people in clubs has almost doubled. People are so involved this year, and it is so shocking and happy to see at the same time. I am so happy to see everyone getting involved, stepping out of their comfort zone, and making memories.
