With midterms just around the corner, students should know that their attendance, behavior, and academic performance will determine whether they qualify for up to eight or ten exemptions for seniors who have earned their CCMR point as a senior. Semester exams will be held Thursday, Dec. 18 (B day) and Friday, Dec. 19 (A day).
Students can be awarded one exemption per six-week grading period based on their attendance and tardies. Any absences—even if excused—during the accounting period in a six-week cycle means the student will lose that cycle’s exemption. For example, if a student misses one day in the second six weeks, they lose their second six-weeks exemption. Any tardy during a six-week period also results in losing the exemption for that grading period.
A more serious attendance rule that students will want to look out for is that students who have five or more unexcused absences in any single class will lose all their exemptions for the semester. This includes advisory.
Discipline also plays a role in exemptions. Students who have no discipline in a semester earn two additional exemptions. However, any discipline referrals in semester will result in a loss of two exemptions. Exemptions will be taken from a student if, at any point in the year, they have any DAEP assignments.
Seniors have the opportunity to earn two bonus exemptions if they have acquired their CCMR point, bringing the total exemptions they can earn up to ten.
It is important to note that exemptions do not apply to any dual credit courses or their honors counterparts.
To keep all their exemptions, students should watch their attendance closely, make an effort to arrive to class on time, maintain passing grades, and avoid discipline issues. Seniors hoping to earn bonus exemptions should complete their CCMR requirement as soon as possible.
