Senior Carson Phelps recently competed at the state powerlifting meet in Abilene and brought home the state championship in the 308 lbs class. He was the third male in school history to earn a state championship with a lifting squat of 765 lbs., a bench press of 550 lbs., and a deadlift of 585 lbs. with a meet weight total of 1,900 lbs.
Phelps said he always wanted to do powerlifting and when high school came around, he fell in love with it. Now as his senior season has officially ended, he said he wishes he had one more year to compete.
“It sucks, to be honest,” Phelps said. “The gym has helped me work through hard times.”
Phelps prepared for the state meet for four months, not missing a single day of training and ate the correct number of calories to maintain his stature and is in the weight class of 308 lbs.
“Powerlifting is the greatest sport because all that matters is that you push yourself past your own limits,” Phelps said. “No matter if you are a state champion or if you place last every meet. Getting better is solely based on yourself and your work ethic.”
