The belt is clasped around the competitor’s waist as they breathe in, readying themselves for the competition. The plates meet the bar, and the rack is placed at just the right height. The lifter steps up to the bar, and the meet commences.
Junior Gracelynn Smith and sophomore Alasia Allen both recently competed at the state powerlifting meet after bringing home medals for their lifts at the regional meet. Allen placed fourth in her weight class, and Smith won the title of regional champion, placing first in her weight class. Both girls advanced to the state meet, where Allen placed 8th and Smith placed 11th.
“I have been working hard this entire season,” Smith said. “It paid off, so it felt pretty good.”
When it comes to practicing for the meets, Allen said the workout schedule was consistent to solidify that her lifts were where she wanted them. While working out can be tiring, the effects have shown through both girls’ performances.
“Powerlifting is a fun way to get stronger both mentally and physically,” Smith said. “It is so fun at the meets and meeting new people is always a great experience.”
The new people have not been the only ones keeping the girls motivated to continue in competition, however. Both of them have their own motivations and inspirations they attribute to their successes.
“My biggest inspiration and motivation is my mom,” Smith said. “She always pushes me to be better and holds me to to a high standard, which helps me to always persevere.”
For Allen, her biggest inspirations are her grandfather and godfather.
“After my grandfather’s passing, I knew I needed to work hard to accomplish my goals,” Allen said. “My godfather also inspires me to continue on.”
Through all of their work, the girls have both learned important lessons. These lessons, while being taught through powerlifting, can be used in their everyday life.
“Powerlifting has taught me that if I put my mind to something, I can achieve any plans that I have,” Allen said. “And, that I should trust my coach no matter what because all of his decisions are in my best interest.”
