For most high school freshmen, competing at a state level is a distant dream. Through her hard work and dedication, freshman Marren Crawford has turned that dream into reality.
“It feels unreal at a point, and I am so blessed to have this opportunity, especially as a freshman,” Crawford said.
Becoming a state qualifier did not happen overnight. She has had to maintain consistent discipline with running, lifting, staying hydrated, and even keeping up a healthy diet.
“My dad motivates me to keep running as he always believes in me and loves watching me succeed,” Crawford said.
Running has been a part of her life for years. Those years in running and honing her skill have played a major role in her success.
“I have been running track since seventh grade (two years) and cross-country since eighth grade (one year),” Crawford said. “I have aways had a natural ability to run and my junior high coaches noticed and encouraged me to do long distance.”
Her preparation—hydrating, stretching, and eating well—has paid off in numerous achievements, including district champion, regional qualifier, and state qualifier.
“I am most proud of my district championship because last year I came just under a second short from it and got second,” Crawford said.
For Crawford, cross country is more than just a competition; it is a community. The highlights of each meeting are the people and the kind and motivating atmosphere that they create. The cross-country environment has encouraged her to continue her passion for running even after high school. She hopes to run in college and pursue a successful career in something she really enjoys.
“With running I am now more mentally and physically stronger,” Crawford said. “It has influenced me to be able to overcome things even if they may seem impossible.”
