From the musical sound of her voice to the emotion she portrays through the lyrics she sings, sophomore Shalee Perkins is singing her way to victory.
Perkins is in Pop and Chamber choir and recently advanced to Area. Perkins has been singing her whole life. She has always been surrounded by music. Perkins started UIL because she loves competing.
“I enjoy trying to push myself, not only to prove to others that I can do great things, but to also prove to myself,” Perkins said.
UIL gives her a chance to sing harder music and to grow as a musician; that is what Perkins likes about UIL. It also pushes her to try new things.
“Next year I want to try poetry or prose UIL, but we will see what the future holds,” Perkins said.
Perkins’ long term goal is to be a psychologist, therapist or a music teacher. For now, her short-term goal is to make Area again for choir next year.
“I had lots of fun at Area,” Perkins said. “I made some new friends from other schools and got to sing with a bunch of other people.”
Perkins was the only person why made Area for choir. She traveled with her mom and her choir teacher Stephanie Teague. According to Perkins, she enjoys this program so much, and she hopes that everyone can try it out once.
“I started choir because of how much I enjoyed singing,” Perkins said. “When I was very little, I would sing and dance to songs on the radio. Singing and music overall brings me a since of joy unlike others.”
