In the midst of crowds cheering, kids yelling, and the busy Friday night football game atmosphere, sophomore Chloe Zarate has dedicated herself to the energy, excitement, and pure joy that comes with being the school’s Bear mascot.
Zarate is the 2025 varsity mascot. From middle school to varsity games, Zarate has been a mascot for a total of four years now.
“I tried out in sixth grade, and started in seventh grade,” Zarate said. “Being able to multitask—cheering on the sidelines and being the kids-in-the-crowd’s best friend—is so cool.”
Becoming the school mascot is not an easy task.
“To try out for a mascot, you compile a two minute skit that showcases your performance skills such as animation, pantomime, creativity, and improvisation,” Zarate said.
According to Zarate, at first she was not sure if she wanted to commit to the role.
“I probably would not have tried out if my friends had not said it would fit my personality,” Zarate said.
On game days, Zarate has her own routine to get ready.
“I usually go and get accessories for my bear, maybe candy for the game, get something to eat, and come back,” Zarate said. “I have to drink a lot of water the day of the game, or I feel super drained and dehydrated. I also make sure I don’t eat things that will weigh me down before the game, so light food.”
According to Zarate, the biggest challenge is heat.
“It feels 10 degrees hotter in the costume than outside,” Zarate said. “When I get overheated, it is the worst feeling. I guess that I have a good heat tolerance because I can disregard heat for a long time.”
Despite the challenges, her favorite part of being mascot makes it all worth it.
“I love seeing kids get so happy and excited when they see me,” Zarate said. “I love hearing them yell my bear’s name because they want to play rock, paper, scissors.”
