When I think of the role of music in my life, a lot comes to mind. It’s something that keeps thoughts from roaming too far, it keeps me busy, and it helps me. Life would be such grayer and dull without it.
I interact with music in some way every day. I play the piano and a variety of percussion instruments, I love to sing, and I listen to various artists. It is something that I enjoy.
I have been playing music for years, I took piano lessons, and now I learn challenging pieces on my own for things like solo and ensemble or just for fun. I feel like because I play piano, I have a different understanding of music when I listen to it. If I want to, I can pick out rhythms, sense tempo and key changes, and focus on any individual instrument or when artists overdub (recording new vocals on top of an existing recording) while singing.
To me, playing music on instruments is a stress reliever. If I’m having a bad day, or just need to get something off my mind, I just start playing the piano. Pieces like Passacaglia, Moonlight Sonata, Nocturne, and Clair de Lune are a few songs I love to play. They are beautiful and so easy to get lost in.
Something that I love about music is that there is a song for everything that I’m feeling, every mood that I’m in, and every season of the year. There are many songs that are full of memories for me. Sometimes I hear a song that I haven’t listened to in a while, and I remember why I listened to it, maybe not just because it sounded cool, but because I really related to it. Or maybe a certain song was playing while something memorable happened in my life, and then every time I hear the song now I get to remember that thing.
I spend a lot of time at the piano and listening to music, it’s something that I love and will keep loving for the rest of my life. I really don’t know where I’d be without it.
