In March, the Lady Bears earned second place at a tournament in Beaumont.

The Lady Bear golf team will continue their season after placing third at the Regional tournament last week. Senior Lauren Cox took first place with a two day total of 147. Thanks to both Cox’s and the team’s standings at Region, the Lady Bears will compete at State in Austin on April 25-26.

“We made State by beating 13 of the 16 teams at the regional tournament,” coach Bart Williams said.

The team shot 408 and 410 for a two day total of 818. Williams said Cox, who he considers to be the team’s strongest player, helped the team earn a spot to State.

“It helps when you have the Regional champion (Cox) on your team and she wins the individual title by 16 strokes,” Williams said.

The boys and girls teams prepared for tournaments by practicing four days a week at the Sunset Grove Country Club where they chip, putt, and hit golf balls. Along with success at Regionals for the Lady Bears, both of the teams were the District champions.

I am very proud of the girls for making it to State.

“I’m very proud of the girls for making it to State,” Williams said. “I am very proud of the boys for improving as much as they did this year.”

Along with Cox, the State-qualifying team consists of: senior Kacie Nichols, junior Teresa Beckett, and sophomores Jessica McLain and Marlee Bird.

“I look for an exciting tournament at State,” Williams said. “I hope that Lauren Cox becomes LCM’s first State individual champion in golf.”
