This Saturday, the Computer Science team will travel to Hewlett Packard in Houston to participate in Code Wars, a competition where students complete prompts by programming a solution to whatever the hosts ask them.

Three out of the 12 people that are attending is freshman Nick Mugleston, sophomore Luke Hanson, and junior Tyler Wolfford. According to Hanson, participating in Code Wars is a unique experience and he has fun doing it.

“Mr. Morris has allowed me access to a programming website called A plus computer science and I do prompts on it,” Hanson said.

In order to prepare for the competition, Mugleston has done his best to attend every practice and has also constantly practiced with eclipse and other online resources.

“It seemed like the next step in my journey of ‘coding excellence,'” Mugleston said.

According to Wolfford, competing in Code Wars can give many benefits toward a potential career and not only is it a good thing to put on a resume, but winning or even getting to the top five can almost instantly land someone a job.

One of the things Wolfford enjoys most is the atmosphere of the competition and getting together with other computer science students.

“This year, there will be close to if not over 200 schools attending Code Wars,” Wolfford said.

Even though he gets a little nervous sometimes, Wolfford said he is confident in his coding skills and doesn’t let anything hamper him.

“After almost a year of competitions almost every weekend, it gets a little easier each time,” Wollford said.
