With much inspiration from her sister and aunt, Senior Jordyn West has been able to dominate the volleyball court this season. Even though the Lady Bears lost in a hard-fought battle against Huffman in the first round of playoffs, West helped her team get third place in district.

The Lady Bears played the Orangefield Lady Bobcats to see who would finish in third place and were able to clinch third place with a victory.

“It felt great knowing we could get another win in before playoffs started,” West said of the team’s win against Orangefield.

West said in order to get ready to get pumped before a big game, she would listen to music, try to remain calm and didn’t make a habit out of second-guessing herself. She also said by having the right mindset, the Lady Bears were always capable of beating any team.

This senior setter has always had a love for volleyball and started playing competitively at a young age. She was in fourth grade when she started playing club volleyball, going to various camps and watching her older sister, Josie, play.

As she got older, West found herself becoming more and more like her sister, who also played the position of setter.

“My biggest inspiration is my sister because I wouldn’t be a volleyball player if I didn’t watch her as I grew up,” she said.

West said her Aunt Ashley also had a major role in her love for volleyball, as she learned all the basic rules from her before she could even play competitively.

Even though the season is over for the Lady Bears, West has learned what it takes to be not just a varsity volleyball player, but a good one – hard work, passion and self-confidence.
