The high school has added a chess club to one of the many on-campus organizations. The sponsor of the chess club is Elise Fountain, a campus history and debate teacher.
“Our administration team is always willing to do anything for students showing an interest in activities, so they were extra excited to help get this rolling,” Fountain said. “Senior Tucker Floyd was the one who pushed this club to start, and he did most of the leg work on creating the club and spreading interest.”
The students play on boards, computers, and puzzles. They are even playing against each other, and have many things they want to accomplish for the club.
“Our main goal is to spread the joy of chess,” senior Kendall Gordon said. “We want to teach anyone who wants to learn, but also have fun and enjoy the morning with friends.”
Currently, the club is not competing in any UIL events, but the members are looking forward to it in the future.
“The students wanted to have an opportunity to play chess at school and as the club grows,” Fountain said. “They want to possibly look into competitions that may exist.”
The chess club is willing to teach anyone and even encourages other students to give chess a chance.
“The club was an opportunity to play the game for fun and competitively with people I knew, and not with random people online,” Gordon said. “I play games every day on chess.com, and take free lessons on new openings and different techniques. I love the amount of people who participated in our first meeting and the friendly competition that comes with chess. More importantly, the willingness to improve our skills together as a group.”
The chess club meets on every other Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. through advisory. They meet on the Tuesdays opposite of the Interact meetings.
