Sophomore Karlie Wedel is a jack of all trades.

Sophomore Karlie Wedel is known for her compassionate qualities and involvement in a wide variety of hobbies and activities. During school hours, Wedel is involved in Quiz Bowl, FFA, UIL Poetry, welding, theatre, and the Stark Reading Contest.

Outside of school, Wedel’s hobbies include beekeeping, cooking, baking, painting, reading and writing. She said each of her hobbies has a different way of balancing out her busy lifestyle. For example, when handling bees, one must be incredibly calm. Wedel describes bees as being “conductors of emotion.” Because they are reciprocators of emotion, one must have a calm and peaceful mindset when handling them.

“I have many different reasons for doing all the things I do,” Wedel said. “For the most part, it’s just a chance to recharge.”

UIL One Act Play plays a large role in Wedel’s life. She described her time spent at rehearsal as remarkable, filled with memories made during the long hours. Being on stage gives Wedel a creative outlet and a way of expression with a competitive edge.

“The ability to walk into our rehearsal space and have 24 teenagers from entirely different social circles and home lives come together, to become friends with people you might never have spoken to,” Wedel said. “To have one common goal and share one mindset is absolutely amazing.”

In order to maintain success throughout her many activities, Wedel said she relies on a strong support system through her family. She explained that her biggest role model is her mother, who inspires her every day to be the best person possible. Wedel believes that determination and confidence, along with support, are the key aspects to success.

In the future, she hopes to continue doing the things she loves, although she isn’t quite sure what her path is meant to be.

“My mom once told me ‘there are things that future you is absolutely in love with, that present you hasn’t even considered,” Wedel said. “Whatever I do I’m sure it’ll catch even me by surprise.”
