‘Zoolander 2’ Proves to be Disappointment
February 16, 2016
With a star-studded cast, an actor/director who has been nominated for numerous awards, and a plot frame from the previous movie, “Zoolander 2” should have been an easy hit movie. However, this movie had more cameos than jokes and was overall a let-down as a sequel to its predecessor.
The first “Zoolander” hit the box office in 2001, starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson and had mostly positive critical reviews – basically, it was a pretty successful movie. “Zoolander” fits into the same category of comedy as “Talladega Nights” and “Dumb and Dumber,” while “Zoolander 2” tried to copy its predecessors’ comedic style and success. However, this is a different era of comedy and the movie felt about a decade old.
The movie follows former models Derek Zoolander and Hansel as they find themselves thrust back into the spotlight after living in seclusion for years. Invited to a major fashion event in Rome, the friends are surprised to see how much the fashion business has changed. Even more shocking is their encounter with Valentina Valencia, a special agent who needs their help. Someone is killing famous pop stars and it’s up to Derek and Hansel to help save the world’s most beautiful people from a similar fate.
This movie is made up almost entirely of cameos. Some of the bigger stars who show up in the film include Justin Bieber, Neil De Grasse Tyson and Sting. This movie has a vague sense of a plot but no real substance to the narrative and feels very stale after the first few minutes. I could almost guess the line an actor would use at any given time and expected better acting from such a large cast of stars.
Do yourself a favor and save your money for “Batman vs Superman,” or any other movie but this one.
