Dearing placed fourth at the state meet.

The LCM Powerlifting team had several lifters advance to the Regional meet and two of those students qualified for the State meet – juniors Hunter Fontenot and Michaela Dearing.

For the girls, senior Courtney Price, junior Michaela Dearing, and junior Sh kalya Rogers competed and freshman Kelsey Dyson went as an alternate. For the boys, senior Garrett Johnson, junior Hunter Fontenot, junior Alex Reed, junior Trey Guillory, sophomore Hunter Angelo, sophomore Victor Davila, sophomore Trent Brown and freshman Lucas Russell competed.

“I think we’ve done really well,” Coach David Kendrick said.

Dearing placed first at the Regional meet on March 2 in Sweeney, which landed her a spot in the State meet. She competed at State in Corpus Christi this past Saturday and placed fourth overall.

“I felt really good knowing all the work I’ve done all year has paid off,” Dearing said.

Fontenot took first place at the Regional competition in Anahuac and is now preparing to compete at State. He hopes to give all he has at the state meet on April 2.

“All the hard work that I have put in is giving me the honor to go to state,” Fontenot said. “It [making State] is one of the best feelings I have ever felt.”

Fontenot and Dearing, as well as the other lifters, prepare for meets by working out three days a week and focusing on certain lifts each day. They also discuss how judges are expected to call things at the particular meet. Fontenot said he prepares by working diligently and surrounding himself with great people prior to meets.

“We work a lot on technique and what they can expect at the meets,” Kendrick said.

Kendrick said he has had a solid group of athletes that have strengthened over the years and he is now getting to see their hard work pay off. He has also been able to work with new lifters, who he feels have made great progress.

“I’ve had bunch new faces this year that I thought did really well and made a lot of progress over our short period of time,” Kendrick said.
