Feb. 1-5 Athlete of the Week: Makenzie Hearn
February 9, 2016
Senior Makenzie Hearn does it all. From dominating the soccer field to blowing her grades out of the water, she has excelled in many different areas.
Just last week, she helped the Lady Bears defeat the Bridge City Lady Cardinals 6-1 in the first district game of the season.
As a senior, Hearn has many things in mind that she wants to accomplish before the season is over.
“My goals are having a winning season and succeeding,” she said. “That makes practices worth it.”
According to Hearn, she prepares for a game by team games with the other Lady Bears and she also enjoys listening to music to help her focus.
“I typically do not get nervous before a game, but occasionally, if it is a big game, or a playoff game I will,” Hearn said.
Hearn said inspiration for the last nine years has come from her two older sisters, who both played sports in high school as well. She grew up attending their games and cheering them on from the stands, and now it’s her turn to take the field.
“It made me want to play because it looked fun,” Hearn said.
According to head soccer coach Cammie Palmer, Hearn has been a great captain and leader of the team.
“She has grown as a player in stepping up so that we are able to run defense,” Palmer said. “Makenzie is a focused student-athlete that represents her peers well in the classroom and on the field.”
