Bear Stage Players to Present ‘Radium Girls’
October 5, 2015
The Bear Stage Players will present their first production of “Radium Girls” this Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the LCM High School auditorium. The production will also be shown on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2:30 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show are $5 and can be purchased at the door.
According to theater director Cory Broom, “Radium Girls” is an ensemble show and uses all 19 actors throughout the play. The lead female is Grace Fryer played by junior Sydney Smith and the leading male is Arthur Roeder, the President of the U.S. Radium Corporation, played by junior Connor Alexander.
The play tells the story of a group of girls that worked in dial painting studios during the latter part of World War I. They were using radium to paint the dials of watches for soldiers so that they would glow at night and the soldiers could tell time in the dark. Although they did not know it at the time, there were many harmful side effects that came from working so closely with the radium.
“This story has always interested me and this particular group of kids fit the roles very well,” Broom said. “The entire play is very interesting and brings a part of American history that many may not be familiar with to the forefront.”
To prepare for their upcoming performances, the students have been practicing every day in class and on the weekends, as well.
“Although this year’s group is young, they are very talented and are working very hard to produce an excellent show,” Broom said.
