Quiz Bowl Team Wins Academic Challenge
The Quiz Bowl team competed in the Channel 6 Academic Challenge on Feb. 28 against Westbrook and Kelly High School and brought home $1500 each in scholarship money.
The LCM team, consisting of seniors Aaron Rose, Shri Murthy and Arish Bheraiya, battled Westbrook in the semi-final round and won with a score of 275 to 240. After claiming defeat, the team faced Kelly and scored 410 points, leaving Kelly in the dust with a score of 150.
“I’m thrilled to see them win,” supervisor and LCM High School Librarian Charlette Roddy said.
Quiz Bowl is an academic competition where teams answer a wide variety of questions in different categories, such as math, history, sports, music and politics.
“Being on a quiz bowl team is a great way to earn academic scholarships,” Roddy said.
Any student is welcome to join practices, which occur every Wednesday morning before schoo and decide whether they are interested in joining.
“Any students with wide interests and who love learning is well suited for quiz bowl,” Roddy said. “We are always looking for students who excel in specific subject areas, as well as students knowledgeable about sports, music and current events.”
On April 18, LCM will take two academic teams to compete in the Cypress Challenge hosted by Lamar State College Orange.
