Powerlifters Start the Season Strong
This year’s powerlifting season has kicked off with a Bear strong start. The team recently competed at the West Orange Stark meet and the female lifters brought home first place while the boys brought home a close second.
“My hope for the season is for everyone to qualify for the region meets and as many as possible qualify for state,” head coach David Kendrick said.
The team consist of 17 members, 10 boys and seven girls. According to Kendrick, both teams are led by senior Blake LeBlanc and junior Courtney Price and the team is already working hard to accomplish their goals for the season.
“My goals are to train hard, reach my heaviest weights on all my lifts, and make it to state,” Price said.
Price has previously been named the “best all-around lifter” and advanced to state both her freshmen and sophomore years. She also won first at a national meet and qualified for the world competition.
“I’m looking forward to the rest of the season and I know that whatever the outcome, I just have to give all my trust to the Lord,” Price said. “I’m taking it one meet and one lift at a time.”
LeBlanc competes in bench, deadlift and squat, and so far he has won second place medals and one third place. He said his main goal this season is to get his squat above 500 pounds.
“I like powerlifting because I get to lift weights in a competition against my friends,” LeBlanc said. “What’s not to like?”
The team will next compete at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5 at Silsbee.
