Volleyball Team on a Roll
The Lady Bear Volleyball team has kicked off the 2014 season with a bang. So far, the ladies are 13-4 and they plan to continue their winning streak throughout the district season.
According to head coach Vicki Castino, the team has a goal of getting 36 wins so she can get to the 500-win mark and if the ladies accomplish this feat, they will have obtained the best record an LCM team has obtained in a season. The ladies will have some tough competition this season, such as Hardin-Jefferson, Hampshire-Fannett, Orangefield, and Bridge City.
The Lady Bears have prepared for the season by practicing over the summer and attending the University of Florida team camp. They also played in a local summer league and some of the ladies even went to individual camps for their own self-improvement.
Castino said that her captains, seniors Jade Piper and Sarah Woods, show leadership on and off the court. The other seniors on the team (Malayzia Winbush, Darby Strother and Marrissa Powell) also help lead the team in many ways. Castino also said that Makenzie Hearn and Maddie Frey add to the team dynamic.
“This is one of the best LCM teams that I have had the pleasure of coaching,” Castino said. “The skill level is fantastic. Our managers are fantastic. It is a great team altogether. It is going to be fun. We just need to stay injury free.”
