This year’s boys and girls cross country teams are taking their wins one step at a time and running past the competition effortlessly. So far this year, in the four meets that the teams have competed in, they have had a great amount of success.
“The teams are doing well at the start of the season,” cross country coach Dena Adkins said. “My boys’ team placed second in their first meet and brought home the first-place trophy in their second meet. They are looking strong and running well as a team and as individuals. The girls are showing some promise as well. They went from 5th place in meet one to second in meet two and improved in their times.”
Something that helps all the runners do well in the meets is having something that motivates them to do it.
“What motivates me to keep running is my goals that I have set for myself like wanting to make state or breaking a record,” junior Allyson Welch said. “My goals for this season are to improve and hopefully place at most of the meets, to place top five at district, and to make state hopefully.”
Junior Derek Lopez said he was most proud of the team for taking first place at the Cardinal Classic Invitational.
“I am proud of my teammates, and all the hard work we put in,” Lopez said.
Lopez isn’t the only member of the LCM Cross Country team that has had a highlight that they remember vividly.
“The regional preview I got 11 out of 284 and had a new season best of 17 minutes and 33 seconds and am ready to do even better,” sophomore Chase Peacock said.
According to Adkins, this season has already started off better than the last.
“The team is in better shape at this point of the season which means we will hopefully be peaking at the right time around district,” Adkins said.
