As law enforcement has become more prominent in Texas school districts, more students have been becoming familiar with their campus officers. LCM’s newest on-campus officer, Chris Humble, has had a smooth transition into the Bear family this school year.
Humble is no stranger to this position, as he has been in the field longer than the students have been in school. He has worked in law enforcement for 35 years.
“I’ve been very fortunate throughout my career, having the opportunity to work in various capacities & assignments,” Humble said. “Like most new officers, I worked as a Patrol Officer. I also had the opportunity to work as an Investigator. I worked on various types of cases, mainly crimes against children which proved to be very challenging at times but rewarding. I also spent numerous years being assigned to Crime Prevention that launched me into a journey that would prove to be one of my most fulfilling. I began working in the school districts throughout Orange County. I also began teaching D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) on elementary & intermediate school campuses to 5th grade students, who are now parents of some students here today. Throughout my years working in the schools, I was employed with the Sheriff’s Office and at one time contracted to the West Orange campuses for several years as their on-campus officer. The majority of my time assigned to a school district was at LCM. My last position I held prior to coming to work for LCM, was the Chief of Police at the Pinehurst Police Department.”
Humble said due to his experience in working in the schools, this transition was not difficult for him at all, nor was the decision to return to do so. Returning to the school seemed like coming full circle, like going back to where he was meant to be.
“The only real process involved various additional training required by the District, Texas Education Agency, and Texas Commission on Law Enforcement,” Humble said. “The training includes ‘ALERRT’ Training, pertaining to active shooter training & scenarios, 20 hours of school-based law enforcement, and an eight-hour threat assessment.”
Humble’s day starts out early and with lots of faith. His days are often unexpected, the beginnings being the only predictable part of the day.
“My day starts at 7:15 a.m. during my drive to school,” Humble said. “The reason I say my day starts on my way is because that’s my prayer time or time for me to have a conversation with God. I never know what’s in store for the day, but I know what I pray for it to be like. I enjoy being outside of the Grove when everyone is arriving in the morning in the parking lot. I am learning that not everyone wants to talk at 7:30 a.m., but we are working through it. I make rounds in DAEP and ISS throughout the day and I am normally in the hallways during transitions. I have various duties concerning campus security and other related assignments. I am available to assist the administration at any time they deem necessary.”
Humble has lasted many years in this profession and believes he has been blessed to be able to do so.
“I have had the opportunity to work with and around people from every end of the spectrum in all types of situations,” Humble said. “Throughout it all, there have been some great relationships built and I have learned a lot about how strong a person’s will can be. I have also learned and continue to believe that most people are out there doing what is right as well.”
Humble will continue his law enforcement journey at LCM, doing what’s best to keep the students and staff safe.
“I will never know how many lives were touched or changed,” Humble said. “I do know, not because of me but because of lots of prayer and faith, there had to be many. I know I was one of them; that is fulfillment.”
