She’s a high school student by day, and a nail technician by night.
For the past four years, sophomore Bree Smith has been running a nail salon in her house, and she has been successful ever since. Her services include acrylic nails in several styles such as square, tapered square, and duck nails, as well as all sorts of nail polish designs. For some people, it takes years to perfect their skill, but for Smith it just comes naturally.
“Not going to lie, I was a natural,” Smith said. “But, there were still times where I had to adjust what I did and learn more about what to do.”
Smith started her business because she loves being creative. Her love of doing nails started whenever her mom bought her a nail kit. From there she wanted to learn more about the process and details of doing nails. She is currently working on getting her license and going to school for cosmetology. Her family encouraged her to start her business and would communicate with their own friends to get their nails done and support her. Her very first clients were her friends and sister.
“My biggest supporters are my best friend and mom,” Smith said.
Smith said she doesn’t find it difficult to balance school and work. During school she tries to finish her work in class, so when she’s working, she doesn’t have to think about school. She said the only thing she finds stressful about it is that she cannot text back to her clients because there is no Wi-Fi.
Running a business involves more than just finding clients; it also involves a good amount of money. For Smith, she’s able to make enough money to buy resources and save some to profit.
According to Smith, to start a business, one has to promote themselves and make themselves known throughout their community. Then, once they start building a clientele, their business will begin to grow.
