Have you ever gotten so nervous that you get sick to your stomach? Believe it or not, having anxiety can actually make you physically sick. It’s crazy to think that nerves can impact your body like that, especially when most people around you say, “that it’s all in your head” and “you need to get over it.” It’s pretty hurtful to hear someone say that, especially when you can’t help it.
Illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and thyroid problems like hyperthyroidism can all be caused by having anxiety. According to information from John Hopkins University, anxiety can make heart disease more difficult to deal with by increasing your heart rate and the risk of cardiac arrest. Some people might even misdiagnose an anxiety attack as a heart attack. Symptoms such as sudden and severe chest pain can appear as a heart attack, but it may be that you’re having an anxiety attack.
Anxiety can also worsen the risk of having diabetes.
According to the National Institute of Health, “despite these issues, individuals with certain stress levels and anxiety do experience a decrease in insulin release; therefore, it reduces the disposal of glucose. It can also make the individual prone to poor lifestyle management and stimulates food cravings. All of which can exacerbate type II diabetes.”
Thyroid problems such as hyperthyroidism can also be worsened by anxiety. While your body is under stress, it can release too much cortisol causing thyroid problems.
Some of the ways you can help people who are struggling with illnesses like that is to be there for them. You can also make sure that they have someone to talk to and communicate with about their struggles. Also, understanding the whole situation as a whole and researching to learn about it can be immense help to others dealing with that burden.
