She steps onto the stage while staring into the bright lights, takes her seat, hands shaking, terrified of how her performance will play out. She takes a deep breath, remembering all her practice for this moment and finally begins to sing. After performing, she stands up waiting for everyone’s reactions in the full room and the crowd does not disappoint; they immediately stand, cheering and screaming, shocked by the amazing talent they had just witnessed.
Sophomore Lacey Cupp recently placed 8th in her tryout for All-Region Choir and is planning to keep advancing to her full potential. Cupp strives to push through and show everyone her true talent.
“My favorite part of getting to perform is getting to put work into my talents and show them off,” Cupp said.
Cupp has been in choir for six years and said her sister was the person who inspired her to join. Even though she has been doing it so long, she said it is still nerve-racking when she steps on stage, but always exciting.
“It would be such an accomplishment if I made it to State for All-Region or even solo and ensemble,” Cupp said.
While Cupp was preparing for her audition, she said she was terrified, but thanks to her choir director Stephanie Teague’s support, she kept calm. Cupp was happy to have someone there for her through the complicated All-Region process.
“I want to thank my choir director for being so supportive to her students,” Cupp said.
In the All-Region process, contestants must sit and wait for their number to be called and they then sing their piece in front of five different judges. Cupp’s piece was given to her, and she performed three different sections of songs.
“I performed a section of ‘I’ll be on my Way,’ a section of ‘Veni Sancte Spiritus,’ and a section of ‘Kyrie’,” Cupp said.
Even though choir is a big part of her life, Cupp still finds time to join in around school and make sure she gets her school work done in class and practice before and after school. She even sings in her church’s praise team outside of school.
“I am in a lot of clubs, including Bear Believers, Key Club, and Meet in the Middle,” Cupp said.
The next step for Cupp is the Pre-Area round of competition, which will be held in November. Cupp said she is excited to show her fellow students and community what she is capable of.
