The boys and girls golf teams both brought home District Championships after a successful two-day tournament at Sunset Grove last week. Both teams will continue on to the Regional Tournament at Ravens Nest Golf Course in Huntsville on April 24 and 25.

Evan Toohey and Jack Tindel tied for top medalist, while Trey Love finished in third place in the boys competition. The team finished with a total of 500 to take first place over Orangefield. The girls team finished with a 714 and Theresa Beckett took second place individually.

“The girls finished 84 strokes better than the second place team so they did exceptionally well against the other teams and they didn’t even have their best rounds,” coach Johnnie Kay Harrell said. “The boys also finished more than 80 strokes better than the second place team. We will continue to practice and look forward to the Regional competition.”

The teams have put in many long hours and will continue to do so in order to advance past the Regional competition.

“The team has been practicing 3-4 days a week from 3:00 to 7:00 at night,” Toohey said. “We hit balls on the range and practice putting. We hope to perform well at Regionals and go to State.”

The teams will face tough competition at Regionals, so one of their biggest strategies will be to just focus on the game.

“Both teams have worked hard all year and have put in hundreds of hours of practice, so they have a lot to be proud of,” Harrell said. “It felt great for them to win District and it was exciting for them to be able to celebrate their wins together.”

This springĀ is Harrell’s first season to help coach Lady Bear Golf, alongside boys coach Bart Williams.

“Before I retired from coaching 10 years ago, my classroom was outdoors most days so I look forward to being outside for golf class and tournaments. Plus, I enjoy missing school as much as my students do,” Harrell said.
